NMA Newsmaker Joy Global President and CEO Ted Doheny Discusses Minerals in Manufacturing in New Video

In the most recent edition of the National Mining Association’s public affairs video series, NMA Newsmakers, Joy Global President and CEO Ted Doheny discusses the high-tech mining machinery Joy Global produces and the valuable role it plays in procuring the minerals and metals needed to meet manufacturing needs. Joy Global is an NMA member and a worldwide leader in the manufacturing, marketing and servicing of vital equipment used in both underground and surface mining.

“Well, as we like to say, ‘It starts here.’ Meaning, in order to enjoy that tablet or other handheld electronic device you probably have nearby, you need minerals and metals” Doheny says in the interview. “And to extract those minerals and metals, you need our mechanized machinery.”
The minerals and metals mined with Joy Global equipment form the building blocks of the high-tech devices we use every day. As Doheny points out, computer chips require 60 minerals, and a robust manufacturing sector requires a predictable and steady supply of minerals and metals to keep the assembly lines moving and boost America’s economy.

But a duplicative and lengthy mine permitting process that keeps those materials from reaching manufacturers like Joy Global needs to be reformed.

“Critical minerals legislation passed in the House and proposed in the Senate is a good start,” Doheny said. “If we hope to support both manufacturers and innovators, we must reduce inefficiencies in the federal permitting process and work to invest in domestic minerals”
