NMA Urges Support for – and Applauds Leadership on – Bipartisan Good Samaritan Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Mining Association (NMA) issued the following statement from Rich Nolan, President and CEO, urging support for the bipartisan Good Samaritan Remediation of Abandoned Hardrock Mines Act of 2023 (S. 2781), which is being considered at the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) committee’s markup today. This historic markup is due to the leadership of Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Jim Risch (R-Idaho), and their staff; the support from the bill’s other 24 bipartisan cosponsors; and the bipartisan staff of the EPW committee who have worked diligently prepare the legislation for the committee’s markup.

“This bipartisan legislation unites the mining industry, environmental organizations and local communities behind commonsense solutions to tackle the cleanup of legacy mine sites. With its passage, we can finally utilize our equipment, collective skills and experience to clean up these sites without the threat of additional legal liability. Support for this bill is critical to removing the obstacles that have prevented the remediation of important legacy land and water resources for far too long. We commend Sens. Heinrich and Risch for their shared vision to advance the environmental progress we all desire,” said Nolan.
